Practice Services And Health Promotion

Alternative Medicine
Dr Smithers can offer homoeopathic treatment in addition to conventional medicine if considered appropriate. Dr Horn offers acupuncture where this could be helpful.

Blood Testing
Patients having blood tests can attend Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital any week day or Holbrooks Health Centre on Holbrooks Lane Wednesday mornings.

Cervical Cytology
The Practice nurses run a comprehensive programme of cervical smear checks. Almost all the smears are done by them. We recommend that all women between 20 and 65 have a cervical smear every three years.

Child Health Surveillance And Immunisation
We run a comprehensive programme of child development checks and vaccinations. These are organised into special clinics run by several partners.

Child Immunisation Schedule
2,3 and 4 months old - Diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus and polio plus meningitis (type B).
12 months-MMR (measles, mumps and rubella)
4 years-Pre school booster (diphtheria, tetanus and polio plus MMR 2).

Health Promotion Clinics/Practice Nurses
The range of clinics is listed in the booklet. These are run by appointment only, made at your usual surgery. The times of these clinics are on the individual surgery pages. Appointments can also be made to see the nurse for blood pressure checks, cervical smears, contraceptive advice, suture removal, routine injections (eg tetanus and travel immunisation), dressings, ear syringing etc.

Maternity And Contraception Services
We offer full maternity services, sometimes in seperate clinics and sometimes during normal surgeries. All antenatal and postnatal work by appointment please. We are also able to give all aspects of family planning advice, from natural methods, through to the pill, coil (IUCD), injection and fitting caps and diaphragms. We are also able to give emergency contraception. Drs Girvan and Mwale carry out coil fitting - by appointment only.

Minor Surgery
All of the doctors are able to perform small surgical operations at the surgeries, such as removals of small lumps or cysts, freezing of warts and injection of joints.

New Patients
Newly registered patients should complete a questionnaire and have a simple check-up from the practice nurse or their new doctor within one month of registration, so we know of any problems.

Patients Aged 40-75 years
Patients in this age group should attend the practice nurse every three to five years for a simple check-up, including blood pressure.

Patients Aged Over 75 Years
Patients in this age group may be seen annually by a member of the practice team, usually a practice nurse, for a simple check-up. If you are not able to attend surgery a home visit can be arranged.

Specific Disease Prevention Clinic
There are clinics for asthma and diabetes and to review patients with heart disease at the Bennetts Road and Headington Avenue Surgeries.

Well Person Clinics
Our Practice nurses run well man and well women clinics at all the surgeries. There is an increasing emphasis on healthy living and preventive medicine if considered appropriate. Dr Horn offers acupuncture where this could be helpful.
